basic oxide
a metallic element reacts with oxygen to form an oxide, in this case
metal and oxide will be called basic oxides.
OXIDE METAL + OXYGEN BASIC ------------------
Na2O Na + O2 Oxygen Sodium Oxide Sodium
in those items with a single state oxidation, to name the corresponding oxide makes use of the preposition "of" between the word oxide and element name, for example
SODIUM OXIDE CALCIUM OXIDE
What about iron?
Here you will find something new: the Iron has two oxidation numbers, 2 and 3, according a como reaccione con el oxígeno actuará con uno u otro número de oxidación.
Si actúa con Nº de oxidación: 2
Fe + O2 FeO
Hierro Oxígeno Óxido Ferroso
Si actúa con Nº de oxidación: 3
Fe + O2 Fe2O3
Hierro Oxígeno Óxido Férrico
En aquellos que tienen dos estados de oxidación utilizamos la palabra óxido, seguida por la raíz (primer parte) del nombre del elemento y una terminación que diferencia a both oxidation states, eg
FERROUS OXIDE IRON OXIDE
In these cases you have to do with that number of active oxidation:
OXIDATION STATE OF TERMINATION
